Pre-Production
Introduction
Their are 3 stages of production, pre production, production and post productions. the first stage is pre production were there is plan what you need for the media product such as script, budget, health and safety, location, legal requirements and hiring cast and crew. Production is the second stage where you shoot the film going by the pre production. The third stage this is where all the editing of putting all the scenes in order and the adding in the visual effect or sound.
Pre production differs in each media sector, such as in a games they will need to hire people that focus on editing, scriptwriters, voice actors and coders while if it was a magazine they would need cameras, lights, models etc yet there would be no need for a script. Yet in film there would be a need for cameras, lights, cast, script, storyboard and etc.
Pre production is important to media sectors since it helps plan everything before hand and without this the production has a possibility of failure. Without pre production the production of the film will be last minutes and unorganized leading to a poor film, while if pre production is done correct it can lead to a high quality film and a good reputation on the production company.
Finance
Sources of Finance
Produces companies get their funded differently depending on the sector. Product placement is used in private funding, this is when commercial products and services are used within the context of certain media where the presence of a particular brand is the result of an economic change. Such as Nike in back to the future, when Marty was given a pair of futuristic shoes. While their is also reverse production placement which is where fictional products become part of the real world, an example of this is how The Simpsons brand Duff beer to shops.
Public sectors can get funded in many ways, one of them are grants, this is a financial award given to a person or group. An example of this is the film The Beast Of The Southern Wild, this grant caused the film to have a $1.5 million budget.
While joint sectors is when public and private sectors come together to fund a film. An example of this is 'Shes Gonna Have It' by Spike Lee were they got $18,000 from the New York State council, a $10,000 grant from the Jerome Foundation, $500 from the Brooklyn Arts and Culture Foundation and money from Lee's parents.
Requirements of Finance
Finance requirements in media products are assets such as camera, make up, lightning, actors, clothing, transport and food. Yet this all could change depending on what sector and/or product that is being made, an example of this is Jurassic Park where they used CGI for the dinosaurs where they spent $170 million on the film while most of it was spent towards CGI . While in video games such as Star Citizen spent $300 million on production which consist of programming new codes, artists development and character model design.
logistics
Project managements/scheduling
when managing a production there are a lot of duties required. Since there is a lot to take on breaking down the script into location and scenes makes it easier to understand, this is normally done by the first assistant director or producer and get passed onto the Director and/or Cinematographer.
Location
When it comes to looking for a location for a film the responsibility falls under the location mangers or location scout, when looking for the perfect location there are many thinks they have consider
Travel - To see how long it will take for the the cast and crew to get their
Aesthetic - the location should match the descriptions of the script and the directors vision
Cost -With more than one location the cost of hotel, transport and catering will need to be considered
Permission - see if you can get permission from land owners to film
Law - there could be laws in place which could possible contrast with the making of the film
Environment - Checking to see if the weather is suitable for the movie, the right lightning is wanted or nearby sounds such as cars or planes
Souring personnel and equipment
Personnel for productions included directors, producers, cast, casting directors, camera crew, hair and make up departments, sound department, catering crew, prop designers and electrons. For the production they will need equipment such as cameras, lights, microphones, computers that allow you to edit and lenses.
One way personnel's can get obtained is by an online freelancer which you can find on platforms such as Elance, Guru and Upwork. while equipment can come from being rented from places like promotion. Considerations for this will be a budget cover sheet to show what will be used, for how long, price per day and the total cost.
Materials
Materials needed at the beginning of production are risk assessments, location recce, production schedule, script, storyboards and an asset log.
In the documentary, Frye which is a about a festival which was advertised well but never happened. To create this they needed equipment such as music, footage of where the festival was supposed to happen, photos of the advertisement of the festival. While it will also need to include interviews so we can see how the people felt and get more information, real life footage which helps show what is happening and social media which show what others think.
While for a fashion magazine there will personnel equipment such as photos, fonts, filters, information on fashion and models or fashion products. There is also a need for models to wear the product, hair and make up for the models and a photographer.
Adherence to codes of practice and regulation
Legal Obligations
Production companies are set a lot of legal and ethical requirement such as watershed, blasphemy, defamation, decency and offensive content. The can make sure the legal and ethical laws are met by
Implications for not adhering to these requirement can lead to copyright or cancelation of the production.
In the film 'The Pianist' which is based around a Polish Jewish musician struggling to survive the destruction of the Warsaw ghetto of World War two. Since this was during a very unhappy time, production could have faced ethical problems such as offensive content because of how much despairing things were happening. This is were the director and scriptwriters would have to see if its appreciate.
The series 'The Boondocks' is about two boys who undergo a culture clash when the move from the Chicago to the suburbs to live with their grandad. Since the series is meant to be for adults and contains graphic content such as dark humor. This is why the show had to put on the legal obligation of watershed
Health and safety requirements
Production companies are placed under health and safety requirements to help keep the crew members and actors as safe as possible. If the healthy and safety requirements are not met the injurie person is able to sue the production company, which slows down the production process.
Establishing/Industry format
The formatting of a script is important for producers since it helps convey what will be happening on the screen. This is important since if the script is structured in a bad it can cause confusion when filming.
Functions of pre productions
Revising ideas of pre production is essential since it lets the crew to see what things they will need to create the production such as location, hair and make up and equipment, this will help the producers make sure that everything is their for the production for the film
Visual content is seen threw the storyboard, this shows the vision wanted for the for the scenes in the production such as camera shots, dialogue, cast line, locations etc. This will also help the crew know what to create for the production the vision will be exacted.
Establishing feasibility is one of the most important things to consider during pre production since everything is centered around the price of everything needed so the bigger the budget the better production. There are multiple things to consider about the logistics of production such as how long you will need to be in a location for, the days availability for the production, permission of the location, transport to the location, equipment that has to be carried over such as cameras, make up and props.
Purpose of pre production
Before filming a a production you always have to consider the pre production which is where you plan the elements of the film before you start production, this includes planning out your budget, knowing the locations for filming, what the film will look like and more. This is vital since it ensures that production of the film will go smoothly and come out well.
If the pre production codes are not met it can lead to legal action such as suing, lawsuit or being arrested. This can change depending on the serious incident is products can be postponed or even cancelation of the production.
Health and safety is mandatory since it helps each cast and crew member feel safe while in the time of production. If these health and safety requirements aren't met it can lead to serious injuries' and depending on the person the production can be delayed or legal action. Yet if the requirements are met it can cause a good reputation of the production company.
This shows how pre production is key to the production of the film and the cast crew on keeping them safe and what will happen if the legal and health and safety requirements are not met.
